Special Olympics PA, the Three Rivers Region

Nonprofit Overview

The mission of Special Olympics PA is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

All training and competition opportunities are provided free of charge to the athletes and their families, enabling everyone to experience the benefits of Special Olympics that extend well beyond the playing field.

Current Needs

Washington County Special Olympics is at a critical juncture. Currently, many athletes with intellectual disabilities in the area lack access to meaningful sports opportunities that promote inclusion, health, and community connection. The demand for Unified Sports programs—where athletes with and without disabilities compete together—is growing, but our resources are stretched thin. To meet this need, we are focusing on expanding Unified Sports programming, particularly Unified Bocce and Unified Track and Field, in schools and community leagues.

Sports are more than just games for our athletes—they are pathways to confidence, friendship, and better health. For many, this is their first opportunity to feel truly included. Unified Sports also foster acceptance among peers, creating a ripple effect of inclusion throughout schools and communities.
